More speed, more versatility, more power – the Nikon Z6 II is an updated version of the all-round mirrorless camera designed for high-end photo and video applications. Despite the plethora of upgrades, the Nikon Z6 II retains its familiar form factor and valued image quality – to the benefit of working multimedia photographers.
The Nikon Z6 II features a 24.5MP BSI CMOS sensor and dual EXPEED 6 image processors. It features a larger buffer depth and a faster burst rate – up to 14fps with single-point AF or 12fps in other focusing modes. Video recording is possible at UHD 4K 30p or up to FHD 120p for slow-motion recording, and external recording gets 10-bit output as well as support for N-Log and HLG (HDR). The sensor is also suitable for working in different lighting conditions, with a sensitivity of ISO 100-51200, and the body’s 5-axis vibration reduction reduces camera shake for sharper handheld shots. Additionally, the sensor features a 273-point phase detection AF system that now also supports Eye-Detect AF in wide-area AF modes and during movie recording, and low-light focusing down to -4.5 EV enables.
The Nikon Z6 II retains its overall physical design, but has been equipped with a new dual memory card slot interface that can accommodate a CFexpress Type B card and an SD UHS-II card to allow for more flexible storage. The high-resolution OLED EVF with 3.6 million pixels and the rear 3.2-inch LCD with 2.1 million pixels and tilting touchscreen offer versatile options for image composition and playback. SnapBridge wireless connectivity can be used for remote camera control, sharing images to a mobile device, and even over-the-air firmware updates.
Firmware version 1.10 unlocks UHD 4K recording at 60p and 50p frame rates, enables raw video output to external Blackmagic Design Video Assist recorders, and improves eye detection performance when using Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF modes.
Second Generation Z
Nikon has redesigned the Z 6 platform to offer more speed, faster processing and greater versatility without sacrificing the beloved qualities of the original camera.
Two EXPEED 6 image processors offer higher buffer performance, a faster continuous shooting rate of 14 frames per second and noticeably reduced blackout times in the viewfinder.
The updated autofocus now offers eye and face detection for people and animals in Wide Area AF mode, for both photo and video shooting.
Timed long exposures are now possible up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without the need for an external remote control.
Two memory card slots provide more flexible file storage options; a CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II slot allow for overflow, separated and repeat storage options.
The USB Type-C port allows for in-camera charging or continuous power for on-the-go charging or longer shooting times.
The direction of rotation of the focus ring on lenses can be switched depending on your habits.
HDR mode (HLG) support for external recording instantly delivers HDR-ready video files for instant playback. N-Log is also available for better control during post-production and grading.
A future firmware update will enable UHD 4K 60p recording in addition to the current 30p frame rate.
An optional ProRes RAW upgrade enables output of ProRes RAW footage to a compatible external Atomos recorder. This upgrade offers greater flexibility in color grading with the ProRes codec, as well as the ability to output uncompressed 12-bit raw material via HDMI. This upgrade will be available in early 2021.
The SnapBridge wireless connection allows the camera’s firmware to be updated, rather than relying on a memory card-based system for updates.
Updated creative shooting modes include multiple exposure, 20 different Picture Control settings and in-camera time-lapse shooting. There is also a focus shift mode for capturing up to 300 consecutive images, shifting the focus position between shots for focus stacking applications.
Compatible with the optional MB-N11 Power Battery Pack for additional battery life and improved handling.
24.5 MP BSI CMOS sensor in FX format and dual EXPEED 6 processors
The 24.5 MP BSI CMOS sensor enables all-round shooting, impressive quality in low light conditions and a high readout speed that benefits continuous shooting, movies and time-lapse recordings. The sensor’s back-illuminated design ensures noticeably clean, highly sensitive output for reduced noise when working at high ISO values, up to a native ISO 51200, as well as vivid and consistent quality at sensitivities as low as ISO 100. The sensor is supported by two EXPEED 6 image processors that ensure high speed throughout the camera system, including the ability to shoot continuously at 14 frames per second for up to 124 consecutive images.
UHD 4K video recording
By leveraging the sensor and processor capabilities for more than just still images, the Nikon Z6 II is also a more than capable multimedia camera. UHD 4K video recording is possible with full pixel readout up to 30p and Full HD 1080p video recording is also supported at up to 120p for slow motion playback. Video files can be saved on the camera’s internal memory cards or as an uncompressed file via the HDMI output on an optional external recorder.
The Nikon Z6 II added advanced video features, including N-Log Gamma for capturing flat-looking shots that maximize dynamic range, and HLG (HDR) for capturing HDR-ready footage. Other additions include the ability to output high-quality 10-bit data via HDMI and an electronic VR function for smooth handheld shooting. Focus peaking can be used to improve manual focus control, and a zebra stripe option is also available to detect overexposed areas within the image. Audio recording can be done via the built-in stereo microphone. Optionally, an external microphone can be connected via the 3.5mm stereo jack for better quality control, and live monitoring is possible via the headphone jack.
Firmware version 1.10 unlocks UHD 4K recording at 60p and 50p frame rates and enables raw video output to external Blackmagic Design Video Assist recorders. It also improves the eye detection performance of Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF modes.
273-point phase detection AF system
There is an array of 273 phase detection autofocus points on the sensor, covering 90% of the image area both vertically and horizontally. This ensures fast and precise focusing in both photos and videos. Thanks to the large detection range, subject tracking works right up to the edges of the image. Hybrid AF is available for video recording, automatically switching between phase and contrast detection systems to ensure smooth focusing during recording. Additionally, the latest NIKKOR Z lenses are optimized for quiet operation.
Vibration reduction
The body’s own 5-axis sensor shift vibration reduction compensates for camera shake by up to 5 stops, regardless of the Z lens used. This system also works with adapted F-mount lenses when using the optional FTZ adapter, which uses 3-axis stabilization.
Case design
A large 3.2″ LCD screen with 2.1 million dots ensures bright, clear and vivid images and live view recordings. The screen tilts to facilitate working from both high and low angles .It is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation and control of settings.
An electronic OLED viewfinder with 3.6 million dots ensures comfortable viewing at eye level. It has a high 0.80x magnification and uses NIKKOR optics to ensure a sharp, clear image. The viewfinder also has a fluorine coating for easier cleaning.
The top of the Nikon Z6 II is equipped with a dot matrix OLED. This energy-saving display provides quick access to important camera settings.
Featuring a CFexpress Type B/XQD memory card slot and a UHS-II SD card slot, it allows for flexible file storage with the option to use repeating, overflowing or split storage methods.
The robust magnesium alloy housing is dust and weather resistant, making it easier to work in harsh climates and adverse conditions.
The ergonomic handle and overall form factor are designed to be easy to handle for extended periods of time, and are further accentuated by a non-slip material and a joystick for seamless adjustments and focus point selection.
Built-in SnapBridge connectivity for seamless low-resolution image transfer and remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enable communication between the camera and a smart device. Additionally, the mobile device can remotely press the shutter button and display a live view image from the camera to enable remote working. Additionally, SnapBridge can also be used as an easier method to update the camera’s firmware.
